Know the session you are rehearsing

The 2026 SCFHS guide describes two 100-question sections, each lasting 120 minutes, with a scheduled 30-minute break between them. Pilot questions are included within the total. Read the current guide and your permit before practising a full session.

Prepare the logistics in advance

• Confirm the centre, appointment time and required arrival time.
• Check the identification and permit requirements, including name matching.
• Read the rules for belongings and any medical accommodations relevant to you.
• Plan travel and keep appointment details accessible in the accepted format.

Build a pacing routine

A 120-minute section of 100 questions gives an average budget of 72 seconds per question. That average is a checkpoint, not a rigid timer for every item. Some questions will be quick; others need more reasoning. During practice, identify how often you spend too long on one item and how much review time you have left.

When you are stuck, identify the decision being asked, eliminate answers that conflict with the stem, choose your best answer and flag the item where the interface permits. Move on rather than repeatedly rereading the same sentence without changing your reasoning.

Rehearse the scheduled break

Plan food, hydration and any permitted medication around the scheduled break and centre instructions. Allow for the sign-out and re-entry process. Follow the displayed timing rather than assuming an informal break schedule from an old article will apply.

Review fatigue as an error pattern

In timed practice, compare errors early and late in the session. Look for missed qualifiers, skipped laboratory units or decisions made before reading the full question. This gives you a specific habit to practise. Fatigue is not a reason to replace clinical reasoning with a memorised phrase or a guess based only on one clue.

If a run of difficult questions unsettles you, return to a consistent process for the next case: identify the problem, read the requested decision and compare the alternatives. Do not infer your eventual result from how difficult a short stretch feels.

A practical rehearsal checklist

1. Complete timed, unseen questions with the interruptions controlled.
2. Record where pacing broke down and why.
3. Review the clinical explanation and the reasoning error separately.
4. Use the next session to practise one concrete adjustment.

If something goes wrong at the centre

Report equipment or administrative problems to staff promptly and follow the provider’s procedure. Do not assume that an unscheduled absence stops the clock or that time will automatically be restored.
